ROLDA ADOPTION CENTER
"...The ROLDA shelter was top-rated among 17 Eastern European animal shelters" evaluated by Animal People's editor Merritt Clifton in 1999-2005.... and re-evaluated in March 2010:
"ROLDA shelter scored 79 in 2004, at the time the highest score I had given in Eastern Europe. Despite the battering that ROLDA shelter has received from the elements in the interim, it scored 84(from a total of 100 points possible) in 2010, benefiting from various improvements made since 2004. ROLDA shelter remains conceptually sound and a safe, comfortable environment for both dogs and the people who work there.

Thanks to our devoted supporters, our dogs have plastic beds, tiles on the floor +heating, cozy blankets, dog toys and soon all the kennels will be completely renovated. What would have happen with these dogs if you were not helping us?!
ROLDA ADOPTION CENTER
Built exclusively from private donations and sponsorships from Europe and USA, ROLDA first shelter met international standards.
Located 7 kilometers outside the city of Galati town, in Smardan village, the shelter occupies a lot of just 2,200 square meters. This requires intelligent design to make maximum use of space, including a large central exercise yard.

Rescued dogs live in heated indoor/outdoor kennels of British design, with individual beds, water bowls, and food bowls for each dog.
The kennel floor is tiled for easier disinfection and cleaning. Though tiled floors are routine in shelters in other parts of the world, the first ROLDA shelter may have been the first in Romania to be fully tiled.

The three rows of kennels at the first ROLDA shelter each hold 40 to 60 dogs. A cat rescue facility is under construction. A cottage on the site with two small bedrooms, a living room, and a bathroom has offered volunteer accommodations since 2003.

THE BEGINNING IN 2003
"After my German shepherd Printz died, at only six years old, I decided to help homeless animals in more ways than just feeding them on streets. I hoped to build a sanctuary or at least few kennels, where animals who were sick, abused, dumped, needing long-term care and veterinary assistance, and a warm and clean place for recovery could be sheltered. I meant to build that place in my Printz's loving memory. I didn't get any kind of support from the local authorities. I had to buy the land outside Galati myself, where I started everything from nothing. I made much bigger investments than I had expected would be necessary Šbut the efforts are rewarded each time I see a happy rescued dog playing. In 2004 the first ROLDA shelter won the top ranking in an evaluation of Eastern European shelters by the editor of Animal People. I know that the hardest part of earning a top ranking is to maintain top-rated facilities, even as others improve. This requires effort and sacrifice, but I am determined to continue searching for ways to help my strays and the ongoing ROLDA programs, hoping that more well-intentioned, compassionate people will become involved and donate in support of our work in the future."
