Sterilization program: Local and international support to help ROLDA control homeless overpopulation problem in Galati

Arcelor Mittal is the sponsor of the new ROLDA dog center,  and since 2007 has been our biggest benefactor - but as much as this company  has helped us to do, their assistance only gives us the facilities we need to help the dogs and cats of the Galati region.

Having good housing for the animals we have just sterilized and the animals we are offering for adoption is essential to our work.

Still we need our other friends and supporters, like you, to rescue, medicate, operate, and educate. Arcelor Mittal has given us a place to work from. Our individual volunteers and donors provide the loving care.

This appeal is meant to remind you that we still need donations to help us "lock the door" here in Galati against more street dogs and feral cats being born.

There are unfortunately still those in Romania who would prefer to just lock up street dogs and feral cats and leave them to starve, as continues to happen in miserable pounds around the country. We are unlocking those animals by demonstrating that sterilizing and vaccinating the animals and adopting them into homes or returning them to suitable habitat is a much better approach.

There are still those in Romania who recommend cruel, bizarre, and ridiculous approaches to reducing our homeless animal population. Some would do things that might have appalled Count Dracula. As silly and ineffective as this sounds, it is really no different in principle from people trying to keep their female dogs and cats in heat behind locked doors to prevent breeding.

It is necessary for us to teach these people to have their dogs and cats spayed, and to provide access to skilled surgeons who can do the operations free or for a very small donation.

We ask for donations from the local people we serve, and other local animal lovers, but we cannot ask for very much yet. Thanks to Arcelor Mittal, Galati had a few years of growing prosperity after Romania came into the European Union – but Arcelor Mittal makes sheet steel for automobile manufacturers.

When the world economy went bad last year and people stopped buying cars, Arcelor Mittal was eventually forced to lay off thousands of workers. Even the workers who still have their jobs are now helping to support more family members. More Galatians than ever are thinking of their dogs and cats as family members, as result of our 10 years of active public education, but their relationships with furry friends are often still young and fragile.

Arcelor Mittal understands that the underlying reason why Romania has a homeless animal crisis is that not nearly enough pets are spayed or neutered. Therefore, even though Arcelor Mittal is currently not able to guarantee us as much help in the future as they have provided in the past two years, they have made us an extraordinary offer of matching funds for spaying or neutering dogs and cats.

Arcelor Mittal will pay for sterilizing 2,000 animals by the end of 2009,we already done 1,013 and 900 more to go for a mission completed. If our wonderful friends and supporters will pay to sterilize as many, we should be able to stop any increase in the animal population in at least the parts of Galati we are able to serve.

We wish to especially thank several people who have already donated generously to our spay/neuter campaign.

The very first donor to the matching fund was Annabell W., whose work on behalf of homeless dogs and cats in the United States was legendary long before she became one of our first and most generous American supporters.

Annabell never told us who she is or about everything she did many years ago to help popularize spaying and neutering pets and homeless animals in the U.S., but the more we learn about her from other friends, the more honored we feel to have her as a friend and supporter.

We also wish to mention Sarah H. from the U.K., who volunteered for two weeks here in Galati to help our free sterilization program. Sarah was extremely helpful at the shelter, where her skills and knowledge in taking care of dogs and cats) were even more valuable when Flori - our regular caretaker - had a terrible loss in her family. Sarah took professional care of this unexpected situation. Sarah treated all of the new-coming animals, and all of the dogs already in our shelter, and prepared dogs to be transported to adoptive families in the U.K.

Our veterinarians are also very grateful to Sarah for her dedication and great work. Thank you, Sarah, for caring about Romanian animals and for all your volunteer time spent to help us!
We hope you will come again because these animals need people like you!

We also have a new veterinarian coming to help at the ROLDA shelters. Let her introduce herself:

“My name is Dr. Jackie Campbell. I am an Australian-trained and registered veterinarian. Over the past few months, whilst traveling throughout Eastern Europe, I became aware of the serious problem of street dogs and cats. Many of the homeless animals I saw were malnourished and in need of veterinary attention.

However, even more heartbreaking than dogs and cats in need are the litters of puppies and kittens being born into such conditions. I believe that whilst all  these animal deserve health treatment and a happy home, the true solution to this growing problem is through targeted sterilization programs.I was attracted to the work of the ROLDA because they recognize not only the need to treat and nurture all those in their care but to reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancy as part of a more long term health plan. This work is so important and I urge everyone to get behind this amazing foundation so they can continue to support the plight of the Romanian street dogs. I intend to visit the ROLDA shelter in October and assist with their sterilization program. Thank you for any support you can give."

Please continue to contribute to our sterilization program as a human alternative to reduce homeless animals overpopulation in Romania!
