2,000 homeless dogs have a new chance to live !
MITTAL Galati -first major sponsor in building ROLDA Adoption Center.
Since December, 2006 ROLDA discussed with MITTAL leaders the possibility of humanely solve the increasing dogs overpopulation problem from the steel plant' garden.
It is estimated that more than 2,000 homeless dogs are roaming there and because the problem is far from being solved in Galati town' area, strays territory is continuously changing, packs of strays moving from one place to another (where the territory is available, searching for food), or being dumped by humans who want to get rid of strays living next to their houses, working place,...
It is known by our supporters, our newsletter' readers or international animal welfare' people (generally) that few years ago, local media wrote that dogs from MITTAL were killed and their dead bodies (hundreds) found in a location outside Galati.
In Romania, it happens often that the overpopulation problem to be approached like that: when the situation become uncontrollable, authorities start mass-killing the strays, usually using illegal "cheap" brutal methods. And in time, proved inefficient methods. But again, usually they don't care about spay/neuter or what's efficient for society in general and dogs in particular, they kill/slaughter and than, move on !
During the time, different slaughter were presented by many Romanian groups across the country(in big or small towns),especially these slaughters are organized in/around pounds managed by local authorities(City Hall ,City Councils, salubrisation society,...)
There were few mass-killing of strays known by most of international animal activists: starting with the well-known slaughter of dogs from Bucharest, organized by former Mayor of Bucharest-Traian Basescu -now, unfortunately, Romanian president;the slaughter from Renault-Dacia Mioveni,...
Thanks to ROLDA' s volunteer efforts, the situation changed now for the first time in Romania animal protection history, a corporation is willing to take responsibility and invest in this problem, rather than mass-kill the poor strays.
These 2,000 dogs were convicted to death in Romanian "normal" circumstances….but thanks to leaders respecting life and respecting also the local community wish (ROLDA estimates that in Galati more than 1/3 from population are animal' lovers), these 2,000 dogs have a chance to a new life….away from misery, away from lack of food, accidents( hit by cars,...)or humans' violence. With your help ,they can live securely ,be spayed/neutered...
Rotary Club Galati supports ROLDA's initiative. We are making an appeal to all readers to spread out this appeal ,it's important for the animals world to hear good news from Romania, even if this happens rarely or especially because of this, because good initiative should be encouraged !
We are hoping that national and international media will be interested about this wonderful news, we hope that reporters will contact us or even come and do the reports here.
We need sponsors like animals food suppliers, veterinary supply distributors ,medical equipments,... Everything that a shelter ,a company or animal' lovers would like to spare would be wonderful as we at the beginning ,we start from zero.
We need dog beds, blankets, bowls for water and food(preferring stainless steel) office furniture, grooming supplies ,any other dog /cat related accessory...
Please contact us with your suggestions and thoughts.
13.06.2007 Animal lovers meeting ,organized in Galati. Around 100 persons attending.
Galati mayor , Dumitru Nicolae expressed his disapprovement that ROLDA presented to the international opinion the local pounds 'situation in a way that marked negatively Galati' image as a whole.
He was also upset about the fact we invited foreign people to visit and see the situation with their own eyes.
Many thanks to MASTERFOODS for offering an important quantity of dry dogfood for our dogs !

Local pound dogs : no veterinary support!
Since 2004,when ROLDA started helping the first municipal pound, we were shocked to realize that the veterinary support is missing completely.
Knowing that a shelter /pound in Romania cannot function without a veterinary 'supervision, we investigated whom this vet is .We found that a certain lady vet named Stefan ,with connections at Veterinary Direction (her husband working there)has a collaboration contract with ECOSAL ,the responsible for the two local pounds.
Later, we received an official document as reply to our eternal questions related with the pound' strays situation ,where it was confirmed that Mrs. Stefan is the veterinary responsible, also Mrs.Gheorghita Ileana (who works for a US charity operating in Galati)is a collaborator.
Contact us for full documents!
Everything would sound as normal as possible if these two vets would actually help at least dogs with serious health problem.
The poor dog from photo is living at Mr Cenac (first local pound).
Despite repeated appeals, this dog was left without medical assistance. His meat was off the bone ,an open wound was cared by Mr Cenac the best he knew until ROLDA took the dog to our vet,Mr.Gingarasu -where he was properly cared.
The doggy is now almost recovered.
What surprise me the most (in this story that might be boring for some readers) is the indifference of people ,their attitude :to gossip ,to backstab...while things are far to be improved ,while there are still few people in Galati who do the work DAILY while others feel good only in front of cameras and make trips to Romania, imagining that they 've changed the World in few days....
Our sincere gratitude goes to all our supporters ,especially to Mrs.Veronica T. (representative of ROLDA in UK)and Mrs. Maxine L.(volunteer ROLDA UK secretary) for continous support in difficult conditions
For our UK supporters receiving the newsletter by mailing : please let us know if you preffer receiving it electronically, to save the postage costs. If yes, please write us your email address.Thank you for understanding !
