Dear animal lover, dear friends and supporters,
Please take a moment to read ROLDA June newsletter which includes news about our work in Romania.
BRENDA ADOPTED INDIANA,A LOVELY CAT AND HONEY/REGE THE DOG
This just came from Brenda that adopted a cat Indiana and a dog Honey from ROLDA shelters:
We are ALL doing very well. Ben's cat, Indiana is growing and still very playful. She has been a very good friend to him and gives him lots of company in his apartment. Also, Rege Honey is still our sweet little cuddle bug! He gets along well with our other dogs, Cookie and Bear and plays with a kitten that was recently dumped on our land last week. In the house he gives our older cat, DJ his space and vice versa and our outside older cat, Freckles, just lets him know his place and he obeys. For a few days we had a visiting dog friend, Princess, and they both got along very well.. They were so cute!! I've attached a few pictures of Rege & Indiana for you. I've tried several times getting a picture of Rege playing with the other dogs, but he bounces around so much that I can't get a good picture. (smile) Maybe I'll get lucky this summer with getting some better shots.
Your Friend,
Brenda
1 JUNE –ME AND MY BEST FRIEND ONLINE CONTEST
In our town, ROLDA makes huge efforts to keep an interactive community of animal lovers and in the past three years we are organizing in partnership with the most read local newspaper Viata Libera all sorts of contests with tempting prizes: photo contest, graphic painting ,1 June for kids contest,….
This year contest for the small animal lovers was organized between 7-12 June and named “Me and my best friend” and attracted a lot of participants. Just to make yourself an impression, the girl voted the first collected over 9000 votes, which is VERY good for an online contest organized in Romania with pets as a main theme.
Passing over the difficult organizational moments (we learned that we cannot please all the participants!!!), the contest was a success. We are grateful to our sponsors Arcelor Mittal Galati and Cukys for their support.
Please meet the lucky winners:

photo: Laura Stoica was voted the 1st with over 9000 points.
photo: Delia Nedelcu,2nd prize
photo:Nicoleta Bordea,3rd prize.
For 2010 1st of June ROLDA also sponsored with plush toys and with sweet treats and cakes from Cukys the event organized by “Inima de copil”(Children’s Heart) Foundation from Galati.

3 STRANGERS,8 DOGS,ONE STORY
Janet (UK) story: 6 dogs in her pack from ROLDA
Janet and her friend, Chrissy took a short trip to the Carpathian mountains to see the
bears sanctuary in Brasov in the fall of 2007. While in Romania, Janet remembers, "I was
immediately struck by the number of dogs roaming the cities, countryside and small villages... most of them living a miserable and uncertain existence."

The first dog she came close to - she named him Foxy - became the first member of
Janet's Romanian pack. Foxy was hardly surviving, skinny and full of ticks, scared and
hungry. The two British woman called ROLDA to get help with transporting Foxy safely to the UK.
Once in the UK, Foxy suddenly transformed into a confident, nice-looking dog.
You wouldn't recognize him from how he was when he was found and rescued from the Brasov streets.
After visiting the ROLDA dog rescue centers, Janet and Chrissy became permanent helpers in fostering and rehoming dogs in the UK.
In less than two years, Janet became also the adoptive mom of no less than 6 Rommies. She treasures all of them. Every member of her pack was saved from the streets and sheltered at ROLDA, where good food and veterinary care was provided. We handled also the transport documents. These cost around 100 Euros per dog.
The cheapest transport to the UK by car is 150 GBP, paid by our UK partner-Romania Animal Aid.
Beside the veterinary costs, good quality food and the sterilization costs, ROLDA needs
metal foldable crates, plastic kennels for transport, and grooming supplies (brushes, clippers, blades, shampoos).
Maria (Norway) story: came as a volunteer and is now in charge of dogs rehoming in Norway
In spring, 2010 a group of young veterinary volunteers were sponsored by the
Norwegian Veterinary School to help the ROLDA free sterilization program in Galati. Maria is one of the girls who spent three weeks doing high quality work at our clinic, plus helping daily at our rescue centers, evaluating the dogs and socializing them.

On one of her last visits to the large dog rescue center, she was walking around the kennels where newcoming dogs are placed and she couldn't stop noticing a very beautiful puppy just rescued from streets. Aesop, she called him. She decided to follow the strict Norwegian policy and took every legal step to adopt Aesop, the lucky puppy home.
Paul S.(USA) Little Dracula update
Paul visited ROLDA during February, one of the most severe months of winter. Coming from Florida, he was overwhelmed by the snow, which in some places fully covered the outside area of the dog kennels.
While spending an evening at the small shelter cottage, where two volunteers from USA staying during their vacation and fighting against the bad weather to try to stay warm, Paul noticed a small piece of dark fur (with two clever eyes shining) on the volunteers sofa. Paul came closer and took the small puppy in one hand.
The small creature melted Paul's heart in a second, especially when the strong puppy attacked his finger.
Paul phoned his family that a new member of the pack would fly soon from Romania to Florida and her name was Little Dracula well, at first her name was lots of names but for him and me, remembering that day she will always be the Little Dracula!

photo:Small Little Dracula when rescued, back in winter.
The puppy was abandoned at the shelter gate on one of the most freezing days, when temperatures went under -20 C (in daytime). Like most of the puppies born here, this puppy was doomed to die, get very sick or suffer a miserable life with no future with no hope.
The eyes of a hopeless dog talk about his tragedy, and I see countless eyes like this on
the streets, every day but some dogs are lucky to be adopted abroad in safe homes where they immediately transform into the most sensational dogs anyone would dream of.
Little Dracula is a happy dog who got this chance for a good decent life. Thousands more dogs wish for this, but don't dare dreaming because they don't really know what to expect. They never tasted a good meal, in clean bowls, slept in a clean warm bed, had toys, had a safe place to play, or had a companion to call them by a name. These thousand dogs are nameless and haunted, and are despised by most people, who consider them a burden not the result of the people's ignorance about dogs and proper dog care.

The rules concerning animals transport in USA are less strict than those of Norway and the UK, which are the most strict nations about dog imports. However ROLDA knows that millions of animals are put to sleep in US shelters. Therefore we encourage our supporters to adopt from their local shelter.
What do these three stories have in common? Easy to guess: once a volunteer comes to ROLDA, she/he cannot resist NOT to take a dog back home!
How much does it cost to see a happy dog? The rabies test costs 50 Euros, testing the dog for leptospirosis and other illnesses costs 24 Euros, the passport, travel documents, vaccines, flea control and de-worming cost 40 Euros, and the cost of the kennels for transportation varies, but is usually about 100 Euros more.
