Because homeless animals suffer in silence, we must be their voices...
Everyday in Romania, homeless animals wander the streets, searching for food, shelter and even a friendly gesture from passers-by. Romanian League in Defense of Animals (ROLDA) has succeeded in saving many of these animals from their cruel life on the streets.

But there is always more to be done. That’s where YOU come in. You are invited to join a growing group of supporters, to raise international awareness of our much-needed, grassroots organization.

 A VISIT TO GALATI SHELTERS

GALATI -- Romanian League in Defense of Animals founder Dana Costin slipped her identity card into the scanner at the main entrance to the Arcelor Mittal steel mill,  was recognized and cleared for admission,  and we drove inside to count dogs.

For the next hour we cruised slowly up and down miles of paved streets and graveled alleys,  looking around every dumpster and every pile of debris heaped up for burning,  under all the parked cars and trucks,  behind each wall and under the many conduits that carry hot air and water from one part of the plant to another.

We counted 25 dogs on the premises, an area so large that most Romanian towns would fit entirely within the fenced and hedged steel mill boundaries.  The complex includes more buildings than most Romanian towns, and bigger buildings,  too.

Dear All,
I work closely with an extremely well-run animal charity/shelter in Galati, SE Romania called The ROLDA Foundation (www.rolda.org).  The charity was founded by a lady named Dana Costin several years back in an effort to try and alleviate the suffering of the many thousands of young stray street dogs and puppies living uncertain and miserable lives.  Dana also runs an educational program in Galati aimed at the local communities in an attempt to promote the importance of animal welfare as well as the neutering of pets in an effort to control the chronic canine over-population problem throughout the country.

Merritt Clifton is the volunteer US trustee, thanks to him we were able to register as a 501-c-3 charity and receive tax-deductible donations from US supporters.

 
Merritt C. is completing the annual documents, controls the financial department and voluntarily does the office work for ROLDA USA. His impressive knowledge in animals field and humane society activism helped our activities in more than one occasion.

Merritt C. visited for the first time our dog rescue facilities in May,2004 and than he came back and re-evaluated the shelters in March 2010,when he actually scored them even higher.ROLDA shelter remains the best in East Europe with 84 points from 100 possible.

At this writing, five years have passed since I last had the opportunity to visit animal shelters and other animal rescue projects in Eastern Europe -- after visiting as many shelters and other pro-animal projects as possible in seven nations during the first half of this decade.

A MODEL TO HUMANELY SOLVE THE HOMELESS OVERPOPULATION PROBLEM

For the 4th consecutive year Mittal sustains the trap/neuter/release or rehome program in partnership with ROLDA and especially in the last year and now,when it's an acute economic crise,their huge efforts should be noticed and respected by all the local community.

Arcelor Mittal is the world's largest iron and steel company.  Arcelor Mittal owns two iron and steel companies in Romania,  at Galati and Hunedoara,  and two pipe producers in Iasi and Roman counties.

Arcelor Mittal Galati is by far Romania's biggest exporter.

Even when the plant cut production to half or even a third of what it used to be,  as a result of the 2008-2009 international financial crisis,  their support of charitable and community projects did not stop.

Arcelor Mittal supports projects helping the environment, education, public health,  and sports.  In 2007 they became involved in animal protection.
